Dental Implants

Dental implants are surgical titanium post that dentist use to mount a tooth or a bridge. The post goes down in the jawbone to, unlike dentures. These become permanent so the user does not have to worry about them coming loose. Dental implants do not have to be anchored to other teeth which enhances oral health. Before getting dental implants, the dentist needs to ensure that the bone has an adequate structure for the implant to stay in place. If the bone cannot support the implant, a bone graft may be needed to ensure the implant can stay in place.

The dentist will drill a hole into the jawbone, where there is no tooth. Dentist use guides such as CT scans to ensure the post is put in the right place. After the post has been put in, it will slowly be widened so the implant can be screwed in. Gum tissue is then secured over the area and a protective cover screw is put in place. The dentist will allow this site to heal for about 6 months. After the 6 month period, an abutment is put in. The dentist will then create a temporary crown. This will create a template for the gum to grow and create a natural shape. After this process is complete, the temporary crown will then be replaced with the permanent crown.

After the dental implant has been placed. It is very important for rigorous hygiene to be performed. If hygiene is not kept up with, this could lead to the implants to fail. Smoking also keeps the implant from healing properly. After surgery, gums may be swollen and the patient may have some facial swelling. This should last for a few days. After surgery, the patient’s diet should consist of soft foods. Sutures may need to be removed, but most dentists use dissolvable sutures. The healing process after the permanent post is in place can take 2 months. It is important that the patient goes to all of their follow up appointments to ensure they are healing properly.
